What is a colour mode?

A colour mode is the combination of the 4 or 3 colours in either CMYK or RGB that make up an image. When mixed together, the size and spacing of each colour overlapping one another creates new colours.

If you see a digitally printed image that has purple in it, there isn’t actually any purple ink there, you are seeing the mixture of CMYK inks overlapping each other to create purple. If you were to look at the purple under a microscope, you would see the CMYK colours.
